Label STEP is more than just a label. Addressing the roots of the carpet industry's complex challenges requires solution-oriented approaches. Label STEP was founded in 1995 in Switzerland and is committed to the well-being of weavers and workers in the production of handmade carpets. The fair trade standards of the non-profit organisation cover basic human rights, including the prohibition of child labour, fair wages and environmentally friendly production methods. Certified Label STEP partners undertake to allow independent controls throughout their supply chains. Label STEP actively supports producers in the implementation of improvement measures and strengthens weavers and workers with educational opportunities covering a wide range of topics from health and safety to financial literacy. The combination of these approaches strengthens the sustainability of the industry and helps to preserve centuries-old handicrafts. STEP is the only non-governmental organisation of its kind active in all major handmade carpet manufacturing countries.
